QUESTION OF CONVENIENCE

After hearing that the local cricket club were only playing away matches this season because opposing teams would not visit their ground, Capel Parish Council on Monday agreed to spend about £200 (£3,000 today) on giving the pavilion a "face-lift." 

Chairman Sir Henry d'Avigdor Goldsmid told the meeting it was the sanitary side of things that had held up plans to improve the pavilion.

The clerk, Mr E.G. Coleman, said the council had opted for public toilets not too far away.

Sir Henry said: "I would be ashamed to continue in the present way if teams won't come here because the facilities are not good enough. We know the ground is all right. It's simply because we are not providing the type of pavilion wanted."

Mr Coleman referred to a public meeting he had been asked to call to discuss the problem of providing a village hall. This would be on April 22 when he would submit total costs for both the hall and the pavilion.
