CAPEL EXPLORED THREE

Many viewers of this website will have heard that the History Society's latest book Capel Explored Three is about to be published. What they will not know, as it is carefully guarded secret, is what picture will feature on the front cover. That will not be unveiled until the book is launched at the Fete on Saturday 6th July, when it will be on sale from the Society's stall in the village hall, price £9.95.

And what do the book's 100 pages, illustrated in black & white and colour, reveal about the life of our parish in times past? Readers can look forward to learning about Tatlingbury Farm in its heyday before hearing tales of grave-robbing and murder, finally rejoicing with happy couples who married at the ancient church of St. Thomas a Becket. Some people will remember attending Miss Looker's Sunday School, but who will know that children's church outings of yesteryear attracted 200 revellers each pleased to receive an orange and a bun from the local gentry? The story of those days when almost every child went to church on Sunday is told here. And did you know that horse races drawing thousands of spectators were run over a course in Tudeley? Or that a World War Two air ace tragically lost his life when his jet plane nose-dived into the ground close to the River Medway, and an airliner en route for Paris made a forced landing next to the old vicarage? As if that were not enough, long-time residents share with readers their fascinating memories of days gone by when life was much simpler, and many say happier, than it is now.

Throughout the book's pages references to people, farms, shops, pubs, clubs, sporting activities and much else besides are certain to evoke fond memories among older readers, and offer a window into the past for young people and those new to the parish.
